Caye Caulker's reef is offshore, so snorkeling here means a boat trip. You choose between a half day in the island's own marine reserve and a full day that adds Hol Chan.
A half-day snorkel trip from Caye Caulker stays in the island's own marine reserve. A full day adds Hol Chan Marine Reserve, the wreck and a manatee area, for roughly twice the price.

Half day or full day?
The choice comes down to Hol Chan. A half-day trip stays close to the island, in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve: a reef channel, the island's own Shark Ray Alley, a shallow coral garden and the tarpon. A full day runs north to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, off Ambergris Caye, and adds a wreck, a manatee area and lunch on the boat. Most full days cover the Caye Caulker stops too.

Can you snorkel from the shore on Caye Caulker?
You can swim and snorkel from the shore on Caye Caulker, but there isn't much to see. The barrier reef sits well offshore, marked by the line of breaking waves off the island's east side, and the water near the beach is mostly sand and seagrass. The Split is for swimming and sunbathing rather than snorkeling. Boats run through the same channels, so don't try to swim out toward the reef on your own.
Reef rules and what to bring
You can only visit Hol Chan on a trip led by a licensed tour guide in a boat registered with the reserve, so independent snorkeling there isn't an option.5

Float or swim over the coral
Use biodegradable, reef-safe sunscreen
Stay with your guide
Don't

The 7-stop full day doesn't take children under 4, and the half-day listings say they aren't suitable during pregnancy or for people with back problems.1
Other snorkel trips from Caye Caulker
Sailing day trips: a few operators sail to Hol Chan rather than motoring. It's slower, with more time on deck.
Turneffe Atoll: full-day trips run occasionally, when enough people sign up.
A flight first: pair a half day with a morning flight over the Great Blue Hole. The shared flights leave at 8:45 am and take about an hour,8 so book the flight first and leave a buffer before a 10:30 am snorkel.
